With over two decades--and a total of twelves albums (Michael Stanley Band, 1974 - 1986; Ghost Poets, 1994 - 1995) between this and 1973's pair of solo albums, "Michael Stanley" and "Friends & Legends", "Coming Up For Air" renewed the trademark musical intensity that has always earned Stanley great respect from the music community. Enticing such distinguished artists as Todd Rundgren, Joe Walsh, Joe Vitale, Clarence Clemmons, Rick Derringer, David Sanborn, and Dan Fogleberg, to lend a hand in the studio, Michael's distinctive 'heartland' spin on rockers and ballads alike continues to please long-time fans and win new ones... On "Coming Up For Air", familiar names surface among the players, with keyboardist/vocalist/songrwriter Bob Pelander, drummer Tommy Dobeck, bassist Michael Gismondi, and lead guitarist Danny Powers lending their talents to the project. Co-produced by Michael and Bob Pelander, Stanley had the pleasure of recording the album in his home studio. Of his set-up, Stanley remarked, "There's a certain amount of freedom to being able to just roll out of bed and record or to walk in whenever the spirit moves you." An intensely emotional and introspective album, "Coming Up For Air" is centered around the title track, which is Stanley's chilling reliving of a heart attack he suffered in 1991. "It was an event that, if you live through it, has to make you stop and take stock of your situation on every level," said Stanley "and with so many friends wanting to know what it was really like, I figured I would just work through the feelings musically... for them, but most of all for me!"
